Book Pick of the Week: Psychological First Aid
May 17, 2021 //
Many people pursue exercise and good nutrition programs to help maintain good physical health but don’t give the same attention to upkeeping good mental health. Dr. Louise B. Miller has designed her book, “Psychological First Aid” (www.louisemillerphd.com) to serve as a valuable guidebook for providing common sense first aid principles to an individual’s mental health while at the same time removing the stigma so often associated with mental illness.
Discussions in “Psychological First Aid” range from learning the signs and symptoms of mental illness (from mild to severe), to where to find help when professional treatment is indicated, in addition to covering such important topics as Suicide, Depression, Dealing with Grief and Loss, Stress, Sleep Disorders and Medications. Written in a user-friendly and conversational style, this book most importantly offers readers practical exercises and suggested lifestyle changes that can help everyone create a more peaceful, satisfying and stress-free daily way of living. “Psychological First Aid” helps the reader clearly understand how to achieve mental wellness, which is just as important as the pursuit of physical well-being.

Psychological First Aid”
Reframing the Way We Think about Mental Illness

April 15, 2021, (Rancho Mirage CA): Integrative Mental Health Specialist and author, Louise B. Miller, Ph.D., is debuting a new book on the treatment of mental illness titled “Psychological First Aid” (Amazon $19.95). Released in time to help raise awareness of Mental Health Month in the USA and Canada, this book is designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness as being a ‘hidden disease.”

Miller applies the same first aid principles that we do for a physical injury to psychological illnesses, explains the mind-body connection, and removes the invisible line society has placed between our physical health and our mental health.

As Miller says, “The world is in the grips of a growing mental health crisis that threatens lives, and it’s not going away. “Psychological First Aid” is groundbreaking in its ease of presentation. In nearly two dozen chapters, Miller, who earned her Degrees in Psychology at both Harvard and Pepperdine, is the author of multiple books and a frequent blog contributor to Psychology Today.

Chapters 1-3: deal with mild, moderate, and severe signs and symptoms. While Chapters 4-5: delve into the available help and where to find it. The remaining chapters cover hot-button topics such as Addiction; Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Grief/Loss, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Sleep Disorders, Stress, Suicide, and Medications.

Each disorder and treatment in “Psychological First Aid” is explained in an easy-to-read format.  Miller, most of all, stresses that people should not be ashamed to seek mental health treatment, that we need to reframe the way we think about mental illness, and that we need to remove the stigma associated with it.
